    The Canon’s Corner

The "Canon's Corner" is a regular feature of our diocesan publication, Forward in Mission. Currently, the Forward is on summer hiatus; publication will resume in September. In the meantime, our diocesan Web site is being updated, with new features to appear in the coming weeks.
Please bear with us!

by the Reverend Canon Charles A. Hough III,
Canon to the Ordinary

It is a joy to report of so many happenings that are taking place in the Diocese of Fort Worth. Our committees and commissions are hard at work providing ministry to so many throughout the diocese and to so many outside of our borders.

Each year Bishop Iker’s wife, Donna, takes it upon herself to host a retreat for the clergy wives at Camp Crucis. Provided for them is a couple days of fellowship, spiritual development, and relaxation in the setting of our newly refurbished camp. This year the Clergy Wives’ Retreat will take place Friday, April 12, through Sunday, April 14.

In addition to this, please note the article in the April edition of Forward in Mission regarding La Consulta at Camp Crucis Tuesday, April 16, through Thursday, April 18. It is our distinct pleasure to host the clergy and people who will be attending from the Episcopal Diocese of Northern Mexico and those who join us from several dioceses in Texas to support this relationship. This serves as a fine extension of the outreach that is done by the World Mission Committee in Fort Worth. If you wish to become more involved in this ministry you are encouraged to attend La Consulta. I have attended several over the past few years and have always come away with a sense of gratitude for the many friends in Christ that we meet from our companion diocese. (La Consulta has been cancelled this year by Bishop Martinez because of unforeseen circumstances.)

The Bishop’s Cowtown Ball, an event for our youth in the diocese, will take place Saturday, April 13, at St. Peter & St. Paul Church, 3900 Morris Lane, Arlington. The evening begins with dinner at 6 p.m.; dancing starts at 7 p.m. This is a wonderful opportunity for our youth and their sponsors and friends to be with the Bishop for an evening of fellowship and celebration.

We are also very excited about a new Camp Crucis summer camp session during the week of June 23. This will be a bilingual session for youngsters who have completed grades 3, 4, 5, and 6. Camp Crucis applications are available through the parish offices. For more information please contact camp director Marie Cullen at 817.573.3343.

Just a few dates to put on your calendar: Don’t forget about the Second Annual Bishop Iker Golf Tournament on Friday, June 21, which benefits Camp Crucis. This year’s Diocesan Convention, where we will celebrate our 20th anniversary as a diocese, will be hosted by the Fort Worth East Deanery at the Best Western Inn & Suites at 2000 Beach Street in Fort
Worth. The convention begins with Holy Eucharist Friday, Nov. 8, and continues with business sessions on Saturday, Nov. 9. More details will be communicated to all delegates and clergy as the date approaches.

Finally, we welcome by way of ordination to the diaconate the Rev.Timothy Matkin, who was ordained on Saturday, March 16, at his home parish of Our Lady of the Lake, Laguna Park. Deacon Matkin will graduate from Nashotah House in May and will begin as Diocesan Curate at All Saints’, Fort Worth, in July. We would also like to congratulate Deacon Matkin and his fiancée, Melisa Johnson, who will be married in May.
