Letter from the Bishop

Preface to the 2005 edition
from the Rt. Rev. Jack Leo Iker, Bishop of Fort Worth

The Mission of the Episcopal Diocese of Fort Worth
is to equip the saints for the work of ministry.

This Customary is offered as a resource and guide to all the clergy and laity of this Diocese, to strengthen our common life and ministry as a Christian family. It offers norms and standards, guidelines and policies, which are intended to be helpful to all of us, both in terms of answering a variety of questions that come to the Diocesan Center on a regular basis and also in terms of establishing certain expectations that I have as your Bishop regarding the way we do things here in the Diocese of Fort Worth.

A lot of work and careful consideration has gone into the pages that follow. Please read them carefully. Every lay leader, as well as all ordained clergy in the diocese, should be familiar with the provisions of this Customary. I am indebted to both Bishop Davies and Bishop Pope, my predecessors, for the editions of their customaries upon which this one is built.

My staff and I are here to serve the clergy and laity of this Diocese, as all of us seek to serve the Lord Jesus Christ, both corporately and individually. Do not hesitate to contact us at any time that we can be of any assistance to you or your congregation.

As Chief Pastor of the Diocese, I offer this Customary as one tangible way of providing pastoral direction and leadership. I know that I can count on the cooperation and support of all of you in following the spirit and aims of the policies I have set forth in this manner.

May God bless you in your witness and ministry in His Name.

The Rt. Rev. Jack Leo Iker, D.D.
III Bishop of Fort Worth
