General Convention: June 13-21, 2006 |
|||||
General Convention, the legislative body of the Episcopal Church, has a bicameral structure similar to the Articles of Confederation. Four clerical and four lay deputies are elected from each diocese to serve in the House of Deputies. Equal numbers of alternates are elected as well, to relieve or replace deputies during business sessions of the House. All bishops (diocesan, suffragan, coajutor, and retired) are members of the House of Bishops and have voice in its proceedings, but retired bishops no longer have voting authority. Presiding Bishop Frank T. Griswold currently is in the final year of his nine-year term of office. As part of the business of General Convention 2006, a new Presiding Bishop will be elected. Triennial meetings of the Episcopal Church Women and National Altar
Guild are held in conjunction with each General Convention. |
